  I went through a step-by-step install of FreeDOS below. I used the NC1 ISO image, but the install should be quite simlar for the FreeDOS Beta 8 H1 ISO. Of course, your install may need to be modified; however, I always like to see lots of screen shots when learning a new OS install.
Opening screen after boot
Select 1 to boot with El-Torito driver
Select 1 for installation
Select language
Notification, press a key...
You will see install instructions
Choose monochrome or color
Choose what type of install
Choose keyboard
Partition Management Screen
Run fdisk, and create DOS partition
Create primary DOS partition
Let's not max out the partition
We'll choose 200 megs
Our primary DOS partition is created
Choose 2 to set active partition
Choose partition to set active
Push esc to exit
We need to reboot off of the CD
Let's Quick Format
Format is done
We are ready to install system files
System files installed
Return to continue installation
Choose where to install to
Select packages and watch them install
Install is done
